Cortona is a picturesque medieval walled town, perched on a hillside planted with olive groves and cypress trees, with views over the Valdichiana (Chiana valley) as far as Lake Trasimeno.
Its delightful medieval streets and steep vicoli (alleys) are a pleasure to wander and its giardini pubblici (public gardens), called ‘Parterre,’ offer lovely walks with superb views.
Cortona, the legendary ‘mother of Troy’ and ‘grandmother of Rome,’ with its Etruscan walls and medieval centre, boasts two of the best museums in Tuscany and a trove of art treasures in more than a dozen churches.
There are plenty of restaurants and wine bars to enjoy as well as many small shops selling typical Tuscan products and grocery produce. Supermarkets are in neighbouring Camucia.
Parking within the city walls is strictly limited and best avoided as there are a number of areas which are off-limits to cars (zone traffico limitato) where unwitting infringements can lead to penalty fines.
Generally Mon-Fri 8:35-13:35 and 15:00-16:00
